Toss or Keep? A Guide to Makeup Shelf Life

How long have your makeup products crowded your bathroom drawer and your makeup bag? Once you open makeup products they are on a time clock. They only last for so long before being contaminated with bacteria that's harmful to your skin.

Here are some rules to follow on what to toss when:

MASCARA

You’ve got two to three months with your mascara wand once it's opened. Once the mascara has gotten thick, or starts to flake, it means its had too much contact with air, and there could be bacteria lurking inside the tube. To prevent this, never pump your mascara. When pulling the applicator out of the tube, twist it around slowly to build up the product.

EYELINER

Liquid liner is in the same category as mascara - toss it after three months to avoid a potential eye infection and never, ever share!  Pencil eyeliners can have a longer shelf life, but you need to sharpen them regularly. Bacteria can linger and could cause irritation. Spray alcohol on the tip before sharpening and do at least three rotations to remove germs.

FOUNDATION

Once opened, you’ve got 6 months to a year. Check that the consistency still looks the same and apply it using a brush or sponge. If unopened, it can last a couple of years, so don’t be afraid to stock pile your favorite!

LIPSTICK

You can get away with keeping your lipsticks for two years without spoiling. If you keep them stored in a dark, cool place they can be kept longer. Once they start smelling rancid or looking fuzzy you’ll know it’s time to throw them away.

EYESHADOWS AND BLUSHES

Provided they are powders, they have the longest shelf life of any product. If you wet them, it's different story. Wetting them creates a breeding ground for bacteria which can cause eye infections. They’ll have to be tossed around the six month mark.

BRUSHES

If they are good quality and you take care of them properly, your brushes should last for life.  Wash after every use with a brush cleaner and lay them out flat on a tissue to completely dry before storing away. You can also use baby shampoo or this DIY tutorial for brush cleaning

Monday Madness 8.8.16

Hey everyone! I hope everyone is having a beautiful Monday!

It's been awhile since I've done a life lately update. I can't say I've had an overly exciting summer, but here goes anyway...

Today marks the start of my FIFTH WEEK at my new job! I've been working a pediatrics office about 5 minutes from my house. I'm happy to say that I know the lay of the land and feel really comfortable in my new role. Plus, I get to can come home for lunch!

A couple weekends ago Nick's younger brother Ben and his wife Meghan came to visit from Oregon. My sister in law Meghan is seriously one of my BFFs. Not only did I get to spend time with her, but also Nick's other brothers' kids. We went kayaking, hung by the pool, and had a nice BBQ. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures. Womp, womp.

I've been reading a lot in my free time this summer. I've gotten through some really great books. I plan to highlight my summer reading list later this month.

I've also been working on trying to get my Younique business up and running. I'm a really terrible sales person, but I really believe in and use the products. I'm asking you all to help me out... please, please, please let me run a Facebook party for you! You can earn free makeup!

So JoJo picked Jordan this summer which made for lame season. Love her ring, but don't see the relationship lasting.

I'm in total Olympic mode. My favorite Olympic moment so far as been Andy Murray leading TeamGB into the Opening Ceremony.

Speaking of tennis... Nick and I head to Cinci in about a week and half for the Western & Southern Open! Can't wait for our summer getaway, to spend some time together, and watch some awesome tennis!

HAPPY MONDAY!

Road to Rio: My Olympic Obsession

Today marks the opening of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.

You may have learned through my Road to Rio serious on the blog that I am Olympic obsessed. There has always been something about the world uniting and marching in together that has always tugged at my heart strings. For the next 2.5 weeks I will be on Olympics overload, watching every night in Primetime, DVRing things during the day, and routinely check nbcolympics.com.

I remember that as a child I would cut out circles from yellow, gray, and brown construction paper and tape them to yarn to create gold, silver, and bronze medals. I remember my parents letting me stay up late to watch my favorite events.

Gymnastics has forever been my favorite Summer Games event. I'd lay an ace banage that we had down on the crapet to serve as my beam. I'd play music on my boom box and do cartwheels and jumps around the living room as the floor exercise. I got my brother and sister into "vaulting". We'd run up to this recliner we had, do a handstand on it, try to "stick the dismount." The Olympics have provide so many cherished family memories for me.

My all-time favorite Olympic story if that of the Magnificent Seven at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Shannon Miller, Domique Dawes, Domique Moceanu, and Jaycie Phelps were among the members of the women's gymnastics team who were dubbed "The Magnificent Seven" after becomes the very first US Women's Gymnastics team to win the team gold medal. I can't believes that was 20 years ago. I was twelve years old and I'll never forget it. I'll also never forget taping it off of TV on to a VHS and rewatching it the entire summer.

This Olympics allows for new champions and more memories. The Open Ceremony starts tonight at 7:30pm EST on NBC.
