Half Bath Mini Makeover

A while back I posted about a Bathroom Upgrade on a Budget and since then have been thinking about updating my half bath. I'd never really given our half bath much thought even though it though it's on the first floor and used by guests.

I never really thought of a concept and it was time to pay it some attention. I really had no idea how I wanted to decorate so I started scrolling through Photowall. At first I thought I wanted to continue the travel theme and blue/gray palette from the other rooms on the main floor, but I eventually came across a vibrant lemon poster that ended up as the jumping off point. I knew it would work with some decor I already had, and as we keep the dog's food in that room and it's off the kitchen, I felt it would give the bathroom a fresh, clean vibe.

It's really amazing how I was able to either repurpose items I already had or pull out items that I wasn't currently using. I found two white shelves in the basement that I had purchased years ago (only needed one for this project), a crystal-like Eiffel Tower that Nick brought me back from Paris, faux grass I bought at a garage sale earlier this year (again, had two, only needed one), and purple flowers from my 35th birthday party. I kept the yellow bathmat and wooden sign that were already in the room. New additions included a soap dispenser and hand towel from Bed, Bath, and Beyond and a new candle (scent: lemon grass) from this Etsy shop.

I could not find a 28"x20" white poster frame anywhere, so I ended up purchasing a black one from Joann's because it was deeply discounted and shipping was free. I picked up some white, matte spray paint. Gotta love spray paint - it bonds to plastic!

Before we get to the Before & After photos, let me just fan girl about Photowall for a sec. I was so excited when Emily contacted me to work with the company. I had just seriously started looking for new stuff for the half bath; it was almost as if she read my mind! All of Photowall's products are manufactured and Sweden and shipped worldwide. I got my product via DHL in a matter of just days (I think 2-3) after placing my order and it was perfectly packaged, arrived safe, and in perfect condition (and shipping is FREE!). Also, I have never seen a home décor company with so many choices. Whatever your aesthetic, you'll find something. I was blown away by the quality of the poster I received. I thought I was going to get your average, thick poster paper poster, but the poster feels more like a canvas or fabric. It's super high quality! Photowall offers canvases, wallpaper, and posters of all sizes!

When I showed my husband the finished product he said, "lemony fresh!" without any prompting. #nailedit

DIY Cellulite Scrub

Between 80 and 90 percent of woman will experience cellulite. Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin. Awesome, right? Losing weight and strengthening the muscles may make cellulite less noticeable, but won't make it go away.

What You'll Need:

1 cup of raw sugar
1/2 cup of coconut oil
20 drops of grapefruit essential oil

What You'll Need to Do:

Stir together all ingredients.
Rub the mixture over damp skin focusing on the thighs and butt.
Gently rinse.

Extra Tips:

The coconut oil plumps the skin temporarily.
Grapefruit oil is high in anti-inflammatory enzymes.

What's Hap'pin'ing in Quarantine?

How is everyone doing in week... 5? 6? of quarantine? I've been staying sane with video chats with friends/coworkers and my sister, brother's wife, and cousin. My sister-in-law and I video chatted/watched that new Bachelor franchise show Listen to Your Heart together. Those shows are always more fun to watch with someone else. I'm looking forward to a virtual meeting with my book club tonight! Along with working on the blog I've been hitting up Pinterest!

Since I've been watching The Great British Baking show I've been itching to make some stuff at home! However, it's really hard to get yeast, sugar, flour, and butter right now. Is anyone else having the same problem? When I do get my hands on some baking supplies I really want to make this cherry almond cake, cheddar zucchini bread, copycat Outback Steakhouse bread (honey wheat bushman bread), and Buckeye fudge.

This quarantine can be a bit stressful with not being able to see loved ones or not working. I'm thinking about trying a green tea detox bath!

I made pork loin using this recipe and it was so delicious! It was very flavorful, moist, and a hit with the husband!

My hair has gotten so long (which I looooove), but I like to have it pulled back at work so it stays out of the way. I'm tired of just twirling it up in a bun so I pinned the following styles to try when I get back to work:

Crafting can keep you going! I've been knitting (I'm at a very basic level) and I like crafting, but I'm not great at it. So I went to Pinterest to find some easy crafts that I can't screw up too badly!

Bathroom Upgrade on a Budget

Bathroom renovation not in the budget? Simple upgrades and updates can make a bathroom look brand new, and you'll stay in budget too!

Hang a new mirror. Changing a mirror can completely change the look of a room. Change out an ornate, highly designed mirror with a scaled back, minimal design or vise versa.

Switch out the hardware. New hardware for cabinets or drawers can show off your personality or tie the room together.

Paint the walls or the cabinets. A fresh coat of paint can really revitalize a room. It's also a cost effective option that can completely change the theme and feel of a room.

Install a new shower head. Update your bathroom with a new shower head. Switch the old one out for something brand new such as a high pressure shower head,  a dual shower head, or a rain shower head.

Replace the decor. Replacing the towels, rugs, trash cans, and/or bath mats is the easiest way to transform a bathroom. Use new colors, patterns, and textures to change up the space.

Change out the faucet. There are so many options to upgrade the vanity and sink. Choose from different finishes and handles to match your design style.

Add something living.  If space allows, add a vase of flowers, bamboo plant, or leafy, green plant. This adds relaxation and the spa feel!

Conquer Closet Chaos

We can't all have the closet of our dreams, but we can have our closets organized they way we've dreamed! Simple additions and subtracts along with helpful tips can help maximize space for a beautiful closet no matter what the size!

Add extra storage. Create more storage by placing a free standing drawer unit in the closet. These units sturdy and not only offer more space with the drawers, but also with their solid tops.

Use wasted wall space. Attach a towel bar and hooks to unused wall space in the closet to create a personalized display for your scarves, belts, hats, and other accessories.

Stagger shoes. You can fit more shoes on a closet shelf if you store each pair in opposite directions. Face one shoe toe to the front and it's mate's heel to the front.

Spend of self dividers. Shelf dividers are a handy organizing tool that keep items separate while also preventing piles from toppling over, allowing you to stack items higher.

Hang bags on the door. Adding hooks to the inside of the closet door will offer space for your entire purse, bag, and tote collection. It also allows you to see what you have and makes picking a purse for your outfit much easier!

Label. Storage bins and baskets are a great way to organize a closet, but labeling is key! It's easy for bins to become crammed and jammed with unrelated items. Avoid this by creating a cute label for each bin or basket.

DIY Pumpkin Face Mask

Pumpkin can be used for more than just jack-o-latterns, pies, and lattes. It happens to be full of vitamins that can brighten and repair your skin!

What You'll Need:

1/2 oz of pumpkin (canned or fresh)
1/2 of a sweet potato
1 teaspoon of honey
1 tablespoon of Greek yogurt
1 pinch of cinnamon

What You'll Need to Do:

Blend all ingredients together.
Apply to clean, damp skin.
Leave on for 10 minutes.
Rinse off.

Extra Tips:

Sweet potato and yogurt help smooth skin.
Honey hydrates skin.
Cinnamon is antibacterial.

DIY Mold Remover

Keeping the tracks and doors of my shower clean has always been a battle, and, let's face it... mold loves to grow in moist, warm places. I enlisted some common household products to help me out.

Both distilled white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are effective alternatives to bleach to kill mold spores in porous and non-porous materials. Hydrogen peroxide is non-toxic and won't leave any toxic residue or fumes. It's also a natural antiviral, anti-fungal, and antibacterial agent.

What You'll Need:

3% hydrogen peroxide
warm water
squirt bottle

What You'll Need to Do:

Mix 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup of warm water in the squirt bottle.
Spray on the mold/mildew.
Allow it to sit for 1 hour.
Rinse and wipe clean.

DIY Acne-Clearing Face Mask

Once upon a time I believed acne only affected teenagers. Truth be told, I've been been plagued with acne for most of my adult life. Between antibiotics courses and topical creams/gels I like to throw in all-natural remedies. This mask features egg white, honey, and lemon which all offer acne clearing properties.

What You'll Need:

1 egg white
1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon of honey

What You'll Need to Do:

Whisk together the egg white and lemon juice until the mixture becomes frothy.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of honey and stir well.
Wash your face with warm water to open your poor.
Apply to mixture to your face using a cotton ball or clean hands.
Keep the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes
When the mixture has completely dried your face, gently scrub off using warm water and circular motions.
Pat your face dry with a towel.

Extra Tips:

Work upwards using a gentle circular motion when applying the mask.
Avoid sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth.
This mask is effective in getting rid of excess oils. If you have dry skin, do not use, or only apply to oily areas such as your T-zone.

How This Mask Works:

5 Ways to Use Almond Oil

Almond Oil has become my favorite holistic beauty product! There are so many things you can do with it. Here's 5:

1. Oil Facial

Slather almond oil onto your face and gently massage in circular motions.

Saturate a wash cloth with hot water and place over your face. Leave the washcloth over your face for 5 minutes, or until it becomes cool.

Remove the cloth and use it to wipe the oil from your face. Your face will most likely feel slick, but your skin will absorb the extra almond oil. A pro to this is that you won't have to moisturize!

With an oil facial you are dissolving and wiping away the bad dirt and oils from your face and replenishing it with clean, nourishing oil. There are no harsh chemicals involved and no suds – nothing that strips your skin. When you strip your skin of its sebum, it goes into overdrive and tries to create more. This causes clogged pores which leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and irritation.

Try adding essential oils to your facial – Frankincense for aging skin, Purification for acne prone skin, or Lavender for a calming effect. All of these come in the Young Living Premium Starter Kit!

2. Make Up Remover

Almond oil contains large amounts of monounsaturated fats, which promote healthy cell membranes in the skin. It's a common component of natural anti-aging products because healthy, hydrated skin stay younger longer! Almond oil is a light and less greasy option that acts as an ideal makeup remover. Almond oil effectively opens the pores and ensures all makeup is properly removed. It also reduces the odds of acne and pimple occurrence and can be used for all skin types. It's great around my eyes. Every eye makeup remover I have ever tried has irritated my eyes. I can slather on the almond oil and not worry about my eyes burns and itching.

3. Nail and Cuticle Treatments

Nail and cuticle treatments containing almond oil can help keep nails strong, hydrated, and less prone to peeling and breaking. Pure almond oil can be used in place of cuticle oil to massage and care for rough, ragged cuticles, and can also help to deliver fatty acids and replace the moisture balance lost during cold or dry weather or from the effects of soap.

4. Eye Serum

If you are looking for a natural solution to get rid of dark under eye circles, almond oil is most suitable. Simply apply the oil before going to bed and allow it to work while you sleep. For optimum results do so regularly for a couple of weeks at least. The treatment will help you get rid of dark circles as well as reduce dark eyelids and crow’s feet. Add eucalyptus essential oil to reduce puffiness.

5. Long and Healthy Hair

Almond oil is a rich source of magnesium which is used in a variety of hair products. Deficiency of magnesium can result in heavy hair fall. Apply almond oil once or twice a week to moisturize the scalp. This reduces hair fall and improves hair quality. After massaging, soak a towel in hot water and wrap your hair with it. This ensures better absorption of the oil.

Beauty A-Z: D - Dye-it-Yourself Hair Color

We are now on week four of the Beauty A-Z link-up! The premise is simple: every Thursday, we share our favorite brands, tips, tricks, or tools that correspond with that week's letter. We'll make our way through the alphabet the next 26 weeks. Link up your "D" post below and make some new friends, learn some new tricks, and discover new brands!

As many of you may have read last week, I am now a full time student. We've had to cut back on costs in our household. One of the ways I was able to cut back was to learn to dye my own hair. This tutorial may seem intimidating, but it's a fairly simple process once you know all the tips and tricks!

Before You Dye

//1// That hair color you see on the model outside the dye box? That might not be the color result you get when you dye your hair. The resulting hue is highly dependent on your current color. Someone who has dark hair will not get the same results as another with blond hair when they use the same box of “honey brown.” Many of the boxes have color charts showing the likely outcome for each starting color, so make sure you check those. Because not every photo or chart on the dye box is accurate, it also helps to look at the color code label. The numbers, or “levels,” indicate lightness - 1 being black and 10 light blond. The letters indicate tone - for example, A for ash and C for copper.

//2// Choose a shade either only 2 shades lighter or two shades darker. Leave anything beyond this to the professionals. Use these websites to help you choose a shade: Garnier Nutrisse Shade Selector; Loreal Paris Hair Color Consultation

//3// Think about hair length, thickness, amount, and condition. The goal is to minimize damage while achieving optimum color. This means if you have lots of hair or very long hair, you might need two boxes of dye to get the best and most even coloring. This also means you might want to leave the dye in your hair for an extra 5 to 20 minutes if you have very thick or coarse hair.

//4// Hair dye contains some harsh chemicals, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you have never used hair dye before, read the directions and do a skin test. Many brands will have instructions on a 24hr or 48hr skin test where you dab some of the dye on your skin to see if you show any signs of irritation.

//5// Do strand test. This is when you apply your hair dye to only a few strands of your hair. It will help you determine whether or not your like the color, and how long you will need to leave it on.

//6// Leave your hair unwashed for 24 to 48 hours prior to applying dye. Shampoos and conditioners can eliminate your natural oils, which are needed to help the dye set it.

//7// Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need in front of you, because you don’t want to stop in the middle of squeezing dye into your hair and have to run to another room to fetch something. This can get messy. Be prepared with paper towels and a comb if you like to use one, and a hand held mirror in case you have difficulty seeing the back of your hair.

//8// Put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the outermost edge of your hairline. The jelly will provide a barrier so the dye does not stain the skin.

//9// Separate your hair into four different sections using the clips. Doing this will ensure that you don't miss a patch.

Apply to Dye

//1// Open your dye box, put on your gloves, and read the directions carefully. Mix your dye according to the instructions from the box.

//2// Apply the dye to your hair in sections. Break up each section into subsections as your work. Begin with your roots to get the most uniform color.

//3// The front and sides will dye faster than any other part. This is because of the warmer temperature around that area. Start with the midsection of your hair, move to the back, and then finish with the front and the sides. This is a great way to even out the color.

After You Dye

//1// Set a timer for the amount of time that is found in the instructions. Follow this direction exactly unless...

//2// Hair will dye faster in warm temperatures because heat speeds up the chemical reaction of the dye. This may mean you might want to leave it in an extra 10 minutes in the winter, or use a shower cap to keep the heat in.

//3// You can use wet paper towels to wipe any dye that may have dripped onto your ears and face. Hair dye will dye your skin too, and it could take days to wash off completely.

//4// Wait until the processing time is over. Jump in the shower or use the sink or tub to to rinse your hair. Rinse completely until the water runs clear.

//5// Condition for a full five minutes with the provided conditioner. Rinse once five minutes has passed.

//6// Do not wash your hair with shampoo. It is best to leave your dyed hair unwashed for 24 to 48 hours. Waiting to wash allows the dye to more thoroughly penetrate your hair shaft.

//7// Avoid exposing your newly dyed hair to extended time in the sun for at least a day. UV rays can interfere with freshly applied hair dye.
