Marriage Monday: Celebrating Six Years

Nick and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary on Saturday! I really love celebrating our anniversary whether we do something fancy or just something relaxed. It's nice to have a day to celebrate us!

Nick really enjoys snowboarding so I figured I'd try skiing. We haven't been outside in months, so we had to take advantage of the 25 degree weather! Let's just say me attempting to ski and take a lesson did NOT go well. It was so frustrating!

After skiing we went out to lunch and spent the rest of the day just hanging out together and watching movies!

Me and Nick after a day in the snow - and after my numerous falls and crying my makeup off.

Each anniversary I try to reflect and think about some of my favorite things we've done or accomplished together. Thinking back over the past six years I've enjoyed going to Europe together, getting a dog, and buying a house.

As much as we've had our ups, we've had our downs. There is constantly a learning curve in marriage and things to work through. Right now I feel more committed to my marriage than I ever have been. I can't wait to see where the next 6 years take us!

It wasn't a coincidence that the four weeks leading up to our anniversary weekend that our church did a series on marriage called Corvette Marriage: A Two Seater Love Affair that LastsI highly recommend checking out the pod casts.  Here are some notes you may find helpful (Nick and I did!) while going through the series:

Healthy Marriages Do Three Things:
1. Glorify God
2. Learn to Love
3. Bless Others

Four Rules of the Road:
1. Never speak the word divorce.
2. I love you even when I don't like you.
3. Never bad mouth your spouse.
4. Mutually agree to grow up in love.

  • We are all blessed by the work of Jesus Christ; therefore, bless other marriages by the way you behave.
  • Communicate expectations constantly. There is no mind reading in marriage!
  • You have to want more for your spouse than you want from them.
  • When you spouse is not doing his or her part, you have to forgive, trust God, and pray about it.
  • God always honors obedience.

Have a great week! xo, Ashley

  1. I 100% agree with you about never bad mouthing your significant other. I always try to speak highly of Mark. Relationships are definitely work sometimes but they are worth the end result if both parties are equally in it. Happy Anniversary!

  2. Six years, holy smokes - congrats!

  3. Love this post :)

I'm sorry the skiing didn't go so great. T keeps saying that we should go, but I'm pretty sure that our trip would be much like yours, so I keep trying to put him off lol.

  4. I absolutely love the way you and your husband value marriage. It is unbelievably refreshing to see. Skiing never goes great the first, second, third... okay and fourth time. Ha! At least in my experience.

  5. I'm glad you were smiling in the ski's, and sad it didn't go so well. Marriage is definitely a union of 2 broken folks, working it out every day !! So glad you guys are doing well and yes! excited to see where the next six years take you.

  6. Love this post. So many great tips on some dos and don'ts of marriage! Oh and I'm with you on the skiing frustration - it gives me such anxiety!!
