Good Reads: First Love by James Patterson // Monday Madness Link Up

In honor of Valentine's day...

Goodreads Synopsis:

An extraordinary portrait of true love that will move anyone who has a first love story of their own. Axi Moore is a "good girl": She studies hard, stays out of the spotlight, and doesn't tell anyone how all she really wants is to run away from it all. The only person she can tell is her best friend, Robinson--who she also happens to be madly in love with.

When Axi spontaneously invites Robinson to come with her on an impulsive cross-country road trip, she breaks the rules for the first time in her life. But the adventure quickly turns from carefree to out of control after the teens find themselves on the run from the police. And when Robinson suddenly collapses, Axi has to face the truth that this trip might be his last.

A remarkably moving tale very personal to James Patterson's own past, First love is testament to the power of first love--and how it can change the rest of your life.

My Thoughts:

I wanted this book to work and I wanted to like it - two teens in love on a cross country road trip, the one has cancer... sounds great right? No, it wasn't. An extraordinary portrait of love? More like an extraordinary portrait of nothing. I thought that in general the whole book was very vague. I didn't get a good sense of who the characters were and why they had decided to go on this journey. I didn't feel any chemistry between Axi and Robinson. You knew they loved each other because they kept saying it, but I wanted something more. I wanted to feel their young love! During the course of their road trip I didn't get a sense of how they were feeling at each stop they made. It read more like a trip interary with a list of each city's landmark. What really put me over the top was that they steal at least three cars during their journey. SUPER unrealistic - and so was Robinson character. Overall, this book is just a disconnected blob of mess. Skip it.

  1. I hate when you get a book and it just doesn't live up to your expectations. Thanks for the review--I'll steer clear of this one!

  5. Ugh, that's the worst!! It's hard to feel involved when you don't get a good feel for the characters and their relationships. What a bummer! Thanks for sharing!
